Laser Skin Resurfacing

Rough or scarred skin, especially on your face, can lead to social anxiety and even fear of leaving the house. The texture of your skin may also cause you to look older than you are. That’s why you need the expertise and experience of qualified health practitioner. Svetlana Pyatigorskaya of Vitality NP NYC in Downtown Manhattan is a certified American Board of Anti-Aging health practitioner and a member of the Cellular Medicine Association. Call her to discuss your skin health needs and your desires to look younger.

What Is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing is a procedure that smooths your wrinkles, helps fade your scars and tightens and tones your skin. You may know the procedure by another name, such as a laser peel, laser vaporization or lasabrasion. The safe, medical lasers in this procedure remove the top layer of your skin in a targeted area to address scars and acne, while warming the next layer of skin to encourage new skin cells to grow. Performed at Vitality NP NYC  in Downtown New York City by founder and nurse practitioner Svetlana Pyatigorskaya,  laser skin resurfacing is an effective treatment for a number of skin conditions, including:
  • Eye, forehead and mouth lines
  • Acne scars
  • Skin that didn’t respond to a facelift
  • Skin that’s been damaged by the sun
  • Aging skin
  • Liver spots
  • Yellowish or grayish complexions
  • Warts
  • Obvious birth marks
  • Large pores, particularly on your nose

Can Anyone Get Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Unfortunately, not everyone is a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing. This procedure works to resurface the top layer of your skin and stimulate growth on the next layer of skin. So laser skin resurfacing won’t work for you if:
  • You still experience acne actively.
  • You have very dark skin, in which case you may want to try another skin treatment, such as microneedling. <Link to Microneedling>
  • You have very deep wrinkles.
  • You have excessive, sagging skin.
  • You’re taking an oral acne medication, which can slow or interfere with your healing.
  • You get cold sores or fever blisters, as a laser treatment can cause a breakout.
  • You take aspirin daily, which can cause excessive bleeding.
  • You have diabetes or another autoimmune condition.
  • You smoke, which can cause complications.
  • You’re pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Your skin tends to scar easily.
  • You’ve had any radiation treatments directly on the target area.
Tell Svetlana if any of these situations apply to you, for your safety and to ensure best results. Laser treatments must be done by an experienced healthcare provider in a clinical setting, like Vitality NP NYC in NYC.

What Can I Expect During the Treatment?

Laser skin resurfacing is an outpatient procedure that usually takes between a half hour and two hours. The length of your procedure depends on a number of factors, including how much skin your nurse practitioner needs to treat. If you need multiple sessions, you need some healing time before you return, so the whole process may take several months. Your nurse practitioner can answer all your questions before your treatment. When you come into the office for your treatment, Svetlana administers the laser in several steps, including:
  1. The target area is cleaned and prepared. A topical numbing agent is applied if the area is small. Otherwise, you may be sedated.
  2. Svetlana uses the laser to burn away the outermost layer of your skin and heat up the underlying layer. The effect isn’t painful, but it may feel the same as a rubber band being snapped on your skin.

How Will I Feel After the Procedure?

You need to arrange for a ride home after the treatment. Over the next one to two weeks, you can expect:
  • Raw, swollen skin, which can last up to a month
  • Itchy skin that you cannot scratch
  • Ointments to apply to keep your skin protected
  • A dressing that covers the area
  • Mild pain, which you can relieve with over-the-counter pain medication
You’re directed to use cold compresses as needed to relieve mild pain and itching. You can’t swim or spend much time in the sun for several weeks. You start to see a difference in the quality of your skin as it heals. The results can last for years with the deeper ablative laser treatments. If you’ve only had a surface lasering, also referred to as non-ablative laser treatment, you notice a difference in your skin texture and pigment over time. You must use lots of sunscreen for the first year after your treatments.
